What is a Green Slip?

A Green Slip is:

  • A mandatory insurance policy that covers injuries or death caused to other people in a motor vehicle accident that is your fault.
  • It does not cover damage to vehicles or property—you’d need comprehensive or third-party property insurance for that.
  • The name “green slip” comes from the green-colored paper form once issued—today, it's all electronic.

Do you need a green slip?

You must have a Green Slip if:

  • You're registering a car in NSW (new or renewal).
  • Your car is used on public roads.
  • You're re-registering a previously expired or interstate-transferred vehicle.

Exceptions:

  • Vehicles used exclusively off-road or under conditional registration (e.g. farm vehicles) might be exempt or subject to different rules.

How much does a green slip cost?

Green Slip prices vary based on:

  • Your age and driving history
  • Vehicle type and usage
  • Where you live
  • Insurance provider

Typical annual costs:

  • Small cars: ~$350–$600/year
  • Larger or high-risk vehicles: $700+
