PPSR Check vs Pre-Purchase Car Inspection: What’s the Difference?

Oct 08 2026

Buying a used car involves more than checking the price, kilometres and service history. Two of the most useful checks available to Australian buyers are a PPSR search and a professional pre-purchase car inspection. They sound similar because both help reduce risk, but they answer very different questions.

An inspector inspecting a car

A PPSR search focuses on records linked to the vehicle’s VIN, while a pre-purchase inspection focuses on the vehicle’s physical and mechanical condition. At RedBook Inspect, we see these as complementary checks that can give used-car buyers a much clearer picture before committing to a purchase.

What is a PPSR check?

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is Australia’s national register for security interests in personal property. When you search a vehicle using its VIN or chassis number, the result can show whether a security interest is recorded against it. The search may also include available stolen and written-off information linked to the vehicle.

A PPSR search is particularly important when buying privately because a registered security interest can indicate that money may still be owing on the vehicle. The official PPSR search also provides a certificate recording the result of your search.

What doesn’t a PPSR check tell you?

A PPSR search is valuable, but it is not a mechanical inspection and it does not provide a complete history of the car. It will not tell you whether the engine is healthy, the brakes are worn, the suspension needs work or the vehicle has signs of poor repairs that are not captured in the records returned by the search.

It also does not provide information such as the amount of finance owing, previous owners, odometer readings or outstanding fines.

What is a pre-purchase car inspection?

A RedBook Inspect pre-purchase car inspection is a physical assessment of the vehicle carried out before you buy. An inspector examines key areas of the car to help identify visible defects, wear, damage and mechanical issues that may not be obvious during a test drive or a quick look around the vehicle.

Depending on the inspection service and vehicle, this can include areas such as the engine bay, brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, underbody, body condition, interior features and road-test observations.

PPSR check vs inspection: which one do you need?

The simplest way to think about it is this: a PPSR search checks records, while a pre-purchase inspection checks the car itself.

A clear PPSR result does not mean the vehicle is mechanically sound. Likewise, a car that appears to be in excellent mechanical condition can still have a security interest or a recorded written-off or stolen status.

Why using both checks makes sense

For many used-car buyers, the strongest approach is to combine the two. First, confirm the VIN and complete a PPSR search. Then arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection before handing over the money.

Together, these checks can help you investigate two separate risk areas: the vehicle’s recorded status and its current physical condition.

Before you buy

Take the time to verify the VIN, review the PPSR result carefully and arrange an inspection when you want an independent view of the vehicle’s condition. RedBook Inspect can help with the physical inspection step, giving you more information before the keys change hands.
